Oven Baked Beef & Onion Foil Packet

This Oven-Baked Beef & Onion Foil Packet is the ultimate “low effort, big payoff” meal. Sealing the steak and onions together traps steam, letting the onions soften into a sweet, jammy topping while the beef stays tender and juicy. The trick? The “onion bed” method—it keeps the steak from touching the foil directly, so it braises in its own savory juices instead of just searing.
Oven-Baked Beef & Onion Foil Packet
Ingredients
- Beef steak (sirloin, round, or chuck) – 1½–2 lbs
- Large onions (thinly sliced) – 2
- Olive oil or melted butter – 3 tbsp
- Salt – 1½ tsp
- Black pepper – 1 tsp
Directions
Step 1: Prep Oven & Foil
Preheat oven to 400°F. Cut 4 large sheets of heavy-duty aluminum foil.
💡 Tip: If using standard foil, layer two sheets. Heavy-duty foil prevents tearing and keeps all the flavorful steam trapped.
Step 2: Season Ingredients
Toss sliced onions with oil (or butter) and half the salt and pepper. Pat steak dry and rub remaining salt and pepper on both sides.
Step 3: Build the Onion Bed
Place a pile of seasoned onions in the center of each foil sheet. Put a steak portion on top.
💡 Tip: Drizzle any leftover onion oil/seasoning over the steak for extra flavor.
Step 4: Seal the Packets
Fold long edges of foil over the steak and roll the ends tightly to create an airtight pouch.
Step 5: Bake
Place packets on a baking sheet. Bake 20–25 minutes for medium doneness.
💡 Tip: For tougher cuts like round or chuck, go full 25 minutes (or a bit longer) to soften the connective tissue.
Step 6: Rest & Serve
Let packets rest 5 minutes before opening. This lets juices redistribute, keeping the steak moist when sliced.
