Slow Cooker 3-Ingredient Cola Ham

This slow cooker 3-ingredient cola ham is exactly the kind of recipe my Uncle Joe loves: almost no work, big flavor, and it fills the whole house with the comforting smell of Sunday dinner. He’s been making something like this for years, and the first time I tasted it, I was sure he had spent hours carefully glazing and tending it.

The magic comes from the simple combination of cola and brown sugar, which slowly transforms into a thick, shiny glaze. It coats the ham with a sweet, sticky finish that makes the dish taste far more impressive than the short ingredient list suggests. As it cooks, the meat becomes incredibly tender—so soft it nearly falls apart with a fork. It’s perfect for busy days when you want an easy main course that still feels special enough to serve guests.

Pair it with creamy mashed potatoes, scalloped potatoes, or rice to soak up the rich juices. For balance, add a green side such as roasted green beans, steamed broccoli, or a fresh salad. Any leftovers are fantastic in sandwiches, omelets, fried rice, or quesadillas. Don’t forget to keep some of the cooking liquid to drizzle over the ham or to keep leftovers moist the next day.

Ingredients

IngredientAmountNotes
Fully cooked ham (bone-in or boneless, unsliced)4–6 lbMain protein
Brown sugar1 cup, packedLight or dark
Cola2 cupsRegular cola, not diet

Instructions

1. Prepare the ham
Pat the ham dry and place it in the slow cooker with the cut side facing down. If necessary, trim slightly so it fits comfortably.

2. Add the brown sugar
Sprinkle the brown sugar over the top and sides of the ham, gently pressing it so it sticks.

3. Pour in the cola
Slowly pour the cola into the bottom of the slow cooker, being careful not to wash the sugar off the ham. The liquid should rise about 1–2 inches up the sides.

4. Cook
Cover and cook on LOW for 6–8 hours or HIGH for 3–4 hours, until the ham is heated through and very tender.

5. Let it rest
Move the ham to a cutting board, cover loosely with foil, and let it rest for 10 minutes. Skim any excess fat from the cooking liquid if needed.

6. Optional glaze
Spoon some of the dark, sweet cooking juices over the ham while it rests. You can also slice or shred the ham and return it to the slow cooker to absorb more flavor.

7. Serve
Slice or shred the ham and spoon some of the juices over each portion. Store leftovers in the refrigerator for up to 4 days, keeping some of the cooking liquid with the meat so it stays moist.
