Slow Cooker Amish Cube Steak with Brown Gravy

This is the kind of dinner you make when you’re tired but still want something warm and filling. A simple Midwest classic, it lets a few basic ingredients—beef, gravy, onions, and potatoes—slow cook into a rich, comforting meal. Everything goes in raw, and by dinnertime, the meat is tender, the potatoes are soft, and the kitchen smells like you’ve been cooking for hours.

Slow Cooker Amish-Style Cube Steak

Ingredients
Cube steak – 1.5–2 lbs (about 4 pieces)
Condensed brown gravy – 2 cans (10.5 oz each)
Potatoes – 4 medium, peeled and sliced
Yellow onion – 1 large, sliced
Dry onion soup mix – 1 packet

Directions

Prepare the Slow Cooker
Lightly grease a 5–6 quart slow cooker.

Layer the Vegetables
Arrange the sliced potatoes evenly on the bottom, then add the onions on top.

Add the Steaks
Place the cube steaks over the vegetables in a single layer.

Season
Sprinkle the onion soup mix evenly over the steaks.

Mix the Gravy
Whisk the gravy with about ½ to 1 cup of water until smooth and pourable.

Pour Over
Pour the gravy mixture over everything, making sure it seeps down into the potatoes and onions.

Cook
Cover and cook on LOW for 6–8 hours or HIGH for 3–4 hours, until the meat is tender and the potatoes are cooked through.

Finish and Serve
Taste the gravy and adjust seasoning if needed. Serve the steaks with the potatoes and onions, spooning plenty of gravy over the top.
