My aunt found this recipe in an old magazine back in 1967 and brought it to nearly every church gathering for years. With just 4 simple ingredients, it was always one of the first dishes to disappear from the table.

This Oven-Baked 4-Ingredient Chicken Royale is a simple yet elevated twist on a classic smothered chicken dish. Using crispy fried onions both underneath and on top creates a contrast of soft, savory flavor and a golden, crunchy finish. The golden mushroom soup adds a deeper, richer taste compared to more traditional options, making this an easy way to get a more indulgent result with just a few ingredients.

Oven-Baked 4-Ingredient Chicken Royale

Ingredients:

  • 2 lbs chicken breasts, trimmed
  • 1 can (10.5 oz) golden mushroom soup
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • 1 can (6 oz) crispy fried onions, divided

Instructions:

Step 1: Prep the Oven and Chicken
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Lightly grease a 9×13-inch baking dish. Trim the chicken breasts and, if they’re thick, slice them horizontally so they cook evenly.

Step 2: Build the Base Layer
Arrange the chicken in the dish. Sprinkle half of the crispy fried onions evenly over the top.

Step 3: Make the Sauce
In a bowl, mix the golden mushroom soup and sour cream until smooth. Pour the mixture over the chicken, spreading it out so everything is fully covered.

Step 4: Bake Covered
Cover the dish tightly with foil and bake for 30 minutes. This helps keep the chicken moist and tender.

Step 5: Add the Topping
Remove the foil, sprinkle the remaining fried onions over the top, and return the dish to the oven. Bake uncovered for another 15–20 minutes, until the top is golden and the sauce is bubbling.

Step 6: Rest and Serve
Let the dish sit for 5–10 minutes before serving. This helps the sauce thicken slightly so it coats the chicken nicely.
