The Ultimate Baked Beans

Baked beans don’t have to be boring or overly soft—this version takes them to another level. Made with a mix of beans, crispy bacon, and a rich sweet-and-savory sauce, they’re hearty, packed with flavor, and always a crowd-pleaser.
No soaking or long stovetop cooking required—just combine everything and let the oven do the work. You can add a little heat with cayenne or hot sauce, depending on your taste.
This recipe started as a friend’s dish and, after a few tweaks, turned into a go-to favorite that never lasts long at the table.
Better Baked Beans
Ingredients
Base
½ yellow onion, diced
½ pound bacon, cooked and crumbled
1 clove garlic, minced
1 red bell pepper, diced
Sauce
¾ cup ketchup
¼ cup molasses
1 teaspoon hot sauce (optional)
1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
1 tablespoon yellow mustard
½ teaspoon black pepper
⅔ cup brown sugar, packed
Beans
15 oz pinto beans, drained and rinsed
15 oz red kidney beans, drained and rinsed
15 oz butter beans, drained and rinsed
15 oz beans in tomato sauce
Instructions
- Preheat Oven
Set oven to 375°F (190°C). - Cook Bacon
In a skillet, cook bacon until crisp. Set aside, then crumble. Drain excess grease, leaving a little for flavor. - Sauté Vegetables
Add onion and bell pepper to the skillet and cook until softened. Stir in garlic and cook briefly until fragrant. - Combine Ingredients
In a large bowl, mix the sautéed vegetables, sauce ingredients, seasonings, and all the beans. Stir in half of the bacon. - Bake
Transfer to a baking dish, cover with foil, and bake for 1 hour. - Finish
Remove foil, top with remaining bacon, and bake uncovered for another 10 minutes until hot and bubbly.
