Slow Cooker Potato & Onion Bake (4 Ingredients)

This recipe is simple, comforting, and rooted in tradition. Passed down through generations, it turns humble ingredients into a rich, satisfying dish. With just potatoes, onions, flour, and butter, the slow cooker creates tender layers and a deep, buttery flavor with minimal effort.
It’s an easy “set-it-and-forget-it” side dish that fits just as well into a busy weekday as it does a relaxed weekend meal. Serve it straight from the slow cooker alongside roast chicken, pork chops, meatloaf, or sausages. Pair it with something fresh like a crisp salad or green beans, and add a tangy side—such as pickles or slaw—to balance the richness. Leftovers also reheat nicely and work well with eggs for a hearty next-day meal.
Slow Cooker Potato & Onion Bake (4 Ingredients)
Ingredients
| Ingredient | Amount | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Unsalted butter | 3 tbsp | Plus extra for greasing |
| Russet or Yukon Gold potatoes | 2½ lbs | Peeled, sliced ⅛-inch thick |
| Yellow onions | 2 large | Thinly sliced |
| All-purpose flour | 3 tbsp | |
| Kosher salt | 1 tsp | Or to taste |
| Black pepper (optional) | ½ tsp |
Directions
Grease the inside of a 4–6 quart slow cooker with butter.
Slice the potatoes into thin rounds (about ⅛ inch thick). Slice the onions into thin half-moons.
In a small bowl, mix together the flour, salt, and pepper.
Layer the potatoes on the bottom of the slow cooker, slightly overlapping. Add a layer of onions on top, then sprinkle lightly with the flour mixture and dot with small pieces of butter.
Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of potatoes on top. Dot the remaining butter over the surface.
Cover and cook:
- On HIGH for 3½–4 hours, or
- On LOW for 6–7 hours,
until the potatoes are tender and the onions are soft.
Optional: Let the dish sit on WARM or LOW for 15–20 minutes with the lid slightly open to reduce excess moisture and develop light browning on top.
Serve directly from the slow cooker, scooping through the layers to get a mix of buttery potatoes and soft, flavorful onions. Adjust seasoning if needed before serving.
